Four Hat Making Courses Presented by Denise Innes-Spencer of the British School of Millinery

Author of the new book Tiara Headdresses launched 2017, Denise has been making headdresses for brides for 25 years. Her experience is vast and she has worked with bridal wear designers including Suzanne Neville, Ben de Lisi and Jane Bolton. Her headdresses have also been sold at Liberty of London and Harrods. The Hat Festival is receiving a donation from the proceeds of these courses.

Friday 1st September
Courses will be held at The Greyhound Hotel, Bridport in the first-floor function room.

1. “Wedding Headdresses with knitted wire and metal pieces.”

9.30am-12.30pm, 3 hours duration.
Ready-made pieces and diamante are now frequently used components of wedding headdresses. Denise will show you how to use knitted wire to make stunning and high-quality bases to attach the metal pieces.

You will learn:
• How to make and cover a base
• How to incorporate ready-made pieces
• How to decorate and assemble a finished piece
• Make the reverse neat and presentable

2. “Make headbands that do not slip for hats and headdresses”

1.15pm – 2.00pm. 45minutes duration.
There’s nothing more annoying than making a beautiful headdress only to find that the headband keeps slipping off the head. In this short course, Denise Innes-Spencer shares a special technique for covering headbands to make sure they stay in place.
You will learn:
• How to select the right colour to match hair
• How to make and cover a headband
• How to finish with a neat and professional finish

3.Rolling fabric trimmings for hats.

3.00pm – 5.00pm 2 hours duration.

They say you are a milliner when you can Block and Roll. Learn the techniques of rolling 3 types of fabric. Cotton organdie for flowers and leaves, Sinamay for bows and drapes and straw fabric for hat trims and loops.
Denise Innes-Spencer will take you all through the techniques of rolling and shaping these fabrics.

• How to make a Sinamy rolled bow and drape
• How to make a straw fabric trim suitable for a hat

4. What to do with pre-made Sinamay shapes: stylish hats for a profit!

This course is strictly for Beginners and improvers of Millinery techniques.
You can now buy numerous pre-made Sinamay shapes for making hats. In this Mini Make and Take session, Denise Innes-Spencer will show you how to make a fascinator from a pre-made Sinamay shapes – and sell it at a profit!

You will learn:
• How to make shape a ready-made Sinamay piece
• How to attach to a headband
• How to decorate using readymade pieces
